Today when I woke up I looked at one of my social media apps and the first thing I see is a pic of Kevin Smith and he was obviously in the hospital. I read his post about how he suffered a massive heart attack and luckily beat the odds, let’s face it he’s beat the odds most of his film career, and survived and will make a full recovery. As corny as it sounds this really hit me hard I am not a very emotional guy but this actually made me cry. I think one of the things that got to me was just watching him the night before on Comic Book Men and seeing him getting so emotional about the biopic film they previewed on the show. I love this guy’s work. I have enjoyed all of his movies, some more than others for sure. I remember hearing about this little black and white film called Clerks right after high school, damn I am old, I went to check it out at my local video store and watched it and at first I wasn’t sure I really liked the film. I remember talking to a friend and he was like dude they play hockey on the roof. A few years later I gave it another watch and maybe I had just matured but I was like damn this is a great movie how had I not love this the first time. As years go by a few more films come out Chasing Amy was my next Kevin Smith experience. Here is a movie with comic conventions in it and I was like man this dude is making a movie with things I can really relate too. Dogma was next and instantly fell in love with it. Genius and if you disagree then eat a dick you’re wrong. We next go into Jersey Girl I enjoyed this one too yes it’s a feel good movie but definitely a likeable film. Jay and Silent Bob was just fun. This movie was entertaining and I can watch it over and over. Then we get to what I thought for a long time would be his last film. Clerks II again this movie kept the soul of Clerks. The flick was funny and again heartwarming. Randal’s speech to Dante towards the end of the film is just touching and makes that whole movie worth watching. Then we go into a film drought but damn he starts blowing us away with Podcasts. This man is definitely one of the people responsible for making this form of media as popular as it is today. So he takes his break form film and comes back with Red State many may not agree but I think this is a great film. He stepped out of his normal element and delivered a solid action flick. Here is the hard part, Tusk, this is my least favorite I have only watched it once and other than Michael Parks I really wasn’t a fan. Last but not least Yoga Hosers, here was a movie that I was worried about after Tusk. I was extremely surprised and again enjoyed the hell out of this. I have been to a couple of his live shows, An Evening With Kevin Smith. These are always enjoyable and I recommend going to see one if you can even if you only enjoy his films a little you will enjoy his stories. So to wrap this up an am a Kevin Smith fanboy and I am so glad he will recover and can’t wait to see more of his work. I know he may never see this and that’s okay because like many others if not for this man I would have never started this blog. He has inspired so many people to express their creativity through the years this is just a small way I express mine. Hope to see your next film soon Mr. Smith and get well soon.
